Kelly grew up in Denver, Colorado and during her time there, trained to be a ballet dancer, but she attended the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York, and later the San Jose Ballet School in California. At the age of 18, she then decided to move to New York City permanently to pursue a career in ballet, and became a part of a ballet company at Radio City Music Hall. She also worked as a dancer in Las Vegas, before and eventually finding her way to acting, initially appearing in summer stock. Soon, television opportunities would open up for her too, until she was cast in her first Broadway role in a production of “Golden Rainbow” which was showcased in 1967. Two years later, she was cast in her first big role in film in “An Unmarried Woman” opposite Jill Clayburgh, then in 1987, in the film “Dirty Dancing” – she was only supposed to have a minor role in the film but was later cast as Mrs. Houseman when Lynne Lipton opted out of the role due to sickness.

Kelly continued to appear in a string of high profile projects which helped build her net worth; some of these included “Private Parts’, “Wonder Boys” and “Blue Moon”. # Quote
1 I would never be Emily’s friend in real life. She’s so opinionated and status quo – definitely not my kind of woman.
2 I have played a couple of nice moms in my career [think Jennifer Grey’s mom in the classic film Dirty Dancing] but, in my opinion, playing nice is a complete bore! The nastier they are the more fun they are [as in Howard Stern’s mom in Private Parts, perhaps?].
3 My friends and neighbors get such a kick out of watching me on television and in movies. They see me do and say things that I would never even think of doing in my real life. They just think it is hysterical, especially when I play mean.
4 My relationship with Lauren is nothing like the roles we play on the show. I am just crazy about my girls. Practically from the moment [Lauren and I] met, we had an instant connect. We never even had to discuss what we wanted to do with our roles. It’s as if we have this emotional shorthand.
