We had the good fortune of connecting with Ali Robins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ali, why did you decide to pursue a creative path? I pursued an artistic/creative career because being artistic & creative gives me so much joy and life. I love waking up in the morning, thinking about the next artistic project I will be creating that day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally? I have a Podcast entitled ALI VS THE WORLD where I share what life is like for me as I grow an artistic business from the ground up while working part time as a waitress. I also do Lifestyle/Street/B&W Photography and vlog my travel adventures on Instagram @lifewithalivlogs but primarily on Facebook @mylifewithali & Youtube @lifewithalivlogs”

I started out in the arts as an actress. I performed in local plays and indie films that were being shot in my neighborhood. As I got older I wanted to take on more behind the camera roles like Director, Writer, Editor, Casting & Producer. I began writing scripts, casting for actors & crew members that soon turned into me shooting & editing my own short films, directing music videos for local artists and starring in other filmmakers’ projects.

While I was solely funding all of my projects, I took a backseat from filmmaking in 2015 to pursue photography & content creating on YouTube. Jumping into the vlogging scene, I traveled a lot for food. Reviewing and taking photos along the way awarded me 2021 Yelp Best Food Photographer and a lot invites to different food events ensued.

In 2019, I decided to venture out into the world of Lifestyle Photography to incorporate more people into my work. With still having a love of Films, I turned my Youtube channel from a food travel vlogger to Film Reviewer and Commentator.

In 2023, I chose to reinvent myself again and started exploring the world Street Photography which I have fallen completely in love with.

I love the fact that what I am at face value is so fascinating to most people when they see my work. I don’t like using my race and gender to justify anything in my life but sometimes when people think of a Black Female artist, certain things come to mind. All things of which I don’t portray in my past or present work. My background of filmmaking has created some a great foundation for me when it came to creating long form content on Youtube and creating creative film-style short form videos on my Instagram.

I suffer, like most artists, a lot from imposter syndrome which cripples me so hard when I’ve been doing good for a period of time. Out of the blue, I feel like giving up, that I’m not good enough and that there are so many other people out in the world that are way better than me so why do I even bother. But then I stop and think, “I am a self-taught artist. I taught myself how to write scripts, operate cameras, edit films and videos, hire actors and crew, take photos and win awards for my work. When things get tough, I remind myself of all the things I’ve accomplished, of all the people that love my content and anticipate new work from me, all the friends I have that support me as well as all the people that wish I could just give up.

If there is one thing that I would love the world to know about me is that nothing that you want to achieve is impossible. I’ve made films because I wanted to even when people were telling me that I couldn’t because I didn’t go to a traditional film school. I wanted to do photography even though I couldn’t afford the expensive cameras and equipment like other more “successful” photographers I knew had. I wanted to create a podcast that could be heard on a major platform even though I was told it would be hard and expensive to do. Now I have a podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and basically any platform you listen to podcasts on.

The point that I’m trying to get at is my biggest critic was and still is myself. People saying that my work is amazing didn’t mean anything if I didn’t believe it myself. Although I had all the external proof that proved that the work I was creating was something special, I had to believe that it was special myself. No fancy degrees. No fancy schooling. All free content on YouTube and books that I read and bought from Barnes & Noble has shaped the kind of person I am today. If I can accomplish the things I want in life, anyone can do it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to? In all honesty, Wynwood Art District is for sure that area that made me fall in love with Miami. Coming from New England, finding likeminded people was very important to me and I found it in Wynwood.

There are so many things to do in Wynwood spending 3 days there is a pretty sufficient amount of time. I love local beer so J. Wakefield Brewing would be a great beer spot. I love superheroes, whether Marvel or DC, and to be surrounding by the amazing artwork with great beer is a plus.

Even though I’m not a huge fan of Design District, Little Hen is such a cute spot for Breakfast and Lunch. A great excuse to look cute, eat delicious food and take photos for Instagram.

For a nice stroll, The Miami Botanical Gardens is such a great place that’s free and also very relaxing.

For Late Night Options, 1-800-Lucky is such a cool Asian Eat & Drink spot, especially for someone like me who loves sushi & ramen with a tasty cocktail. Another spot with tasty beer, a surprisingly delicious array of food items and weekly comedy night would have to be Union Beer Store.

For morning coffee, It would be a combination of 3 places. Imperial Moto (love the motorcycle vibes), Panther Coffee in Wynwood (love the amazing art and location) and Suite Habana Cafe (I can’t get that delicious Double Shot, Brown Sugar, Oat Milk Cortado out of my head).

South Beach is definitely where I love to go for the amazing beach during the day. For cheap drinks with a water view, I can’t go wrong with Monty’s.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout? “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David Schwartz, “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield and a lot of thanks to Youtube for being such an amazing platform for learning new skills and watching other people doing and succeeding in endeavors that I’ve wanted to pursue.
