Sarah Doole Named CEO at Studiocanal’s Red

Sarah Doole, CEO RED Production Company

Studiocanal has appointed Fremantle executive Sarah Doole as the new CEO of its Manchester-based television production shingle Red Production (Years and Years, Safe).

Doole, who has been head of Fremantle’s Global Drama unit since 2013, will take over from RED boss Nicola Shindler and oversee development and production at the U.K. operation. Doole will also be tasked with furthering collaboration between Red and Studiocanal’s other production outfits.

Doole is in advanced talks to bring her newly-launched talent incubator company, Sow the Seed, into the Studiocanal fold. Doole unveiled Sow the Seed last month. The company is focused on bringing new talent and underrepresented voices to international television production, as well as music, podcasts, literature, art, and fashion.

“We have big ambitions for Red and we know Sarah will help the company step up to the next level to become an even stronger international player,” said Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh.

At Fremantle, Doole oversaw the company’s push into high-end international drama with such projects as Deutschland 83, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and The Young Pope. Prior to Fremantle, Doole was Creative Director of Drama and Head of Indie Drama at BBC Worldwide, where her roster of shows included Sherlock, Call the Midwife, and Misfits. She began her career as a documentary maker at Yorkshire Television.

“I’m delighted to be joining Red which has a second-to-none portfolio of drama productions,” Doole said in a statement. “As a proud Northerner I am extremely keen to protect Red’s strong heritage. I’m so looking forward to working with the Red team and, with the support of Studiocanal, to creating a wide range of new, diverse, and inclusive storytelling to sit under the big Red umbrella.”

Launched by Schindler in Manchester in 1998, Red is one of Britain’s leading bespoke TV drama producers, with credits that include such acclaimed series as Queer as Folk, Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax, and Years and Years. Together with Studiocanal, who acquired a majority stake in Red in 2013, the company has produced such recent shows as Harlan Coben’s The Stranger and Safe and Trust Me.
